Dog trailers on an e-bike
- In principle, almost any high-quality, TÜV-tested dog trailer can also be used with an e-bike. What matters is a suitable coupler and staying within the permissible towing load.
- On an e-bike with a trailer, a maximum speed of 25 km/h applies. S-pedelecs are not approved for trailer use. (1)
- Good suspension provides noticeably more comfort for your dog, especially at higher speeds and on uneven ground.
- The Qeridoo Nacho comes with suspension as standard and connects to most e-bikes via the becco coupler system.
Can you use a dog trailer with an e-bike?
Yes, in most cases a dog trailer can be used with e-bikes just as with a classic bicycle. All that matters is that the trailer and coupler meet the common standards and match the axle type of your e-bike.
With a medium-sized dog, the trailer plus payload quickly adds up to a considerable weight. This is exactly where the advantage of the electric drive shows: climbs that become a real effort on a classic bike are noticeably easier with a tailwind from the motor.

Does a dog trailer affect the range of an e-bike battery?
Yes, a dog trailer affects the range of your e-bike battery. The additional weight means higher energy consumption, so the range drops noticeably compared with riding solo. If you regularly plan longer tours with a trailer, a battery with at least 500 watt hours is worthwhile, better still 625 or 750 Wh.
To go easy on the battery, use Eco or Tour mode and take a charger or a spare battery on longer trips. That keeps you on the safe side even on extended routes with a dog trailer and e-bike.
Planning e-bike tours with your dog in the trailer properly
With a little preparation, an e-bike tour with your dog in the trailer can be a relaxed affair. Plan enough breaks for drinking and moving about. Adjust your speed to the surface and avoid unnecessary jolts from potholes or curbs.
How do I get my dog used to the dog trailer behind an e-bike?
First let your dog explore the stationary trailer at its own pace before the first ride begins. Then start with short, slow routes in familiar surroundings and increase speed and distance only gradually. Many dogs get used to this new way of travelling quickly, especially when the trailer has comfortable suspension.
What should you look for when buying a dog trailer for an e-bike?
Before you decide on a dog trailer for your e-bike, it is worth looking at the following points:
- Size: the length of the trailer should match your dog’s standing length plus half the length of its front legs, the width at least twice its chest width, and the height your dog’s size from the ground to the tip of its ears – these are also the measurements used by the ADAC.
- Coupler: a stable connection matching your axle type is essential, together with a safety leash on the coupler.
- Suspension: indispensable for comfort on longer, faster e-bike routes.
- Securing the interior: two tie-in points for your dog’s harness make sure it cannot jump out while you ride.
- Visibility: a rear light, reflectors and a safety pennant considerably improve how well you are seen in traffic.
- Ventilation and weather protection: mesh windows plus insect, sun and spray protection keep your dog comfortable in any weather.
