Safety

Bicycle seat or bicycle trailer: which is safer?

For child transport, safety comes first. Therefore, it's important to closely compare the safety features of bicycle trailers and bicycle seats. This way you can choose the best option for your child's protection.

Safety with Qeridoo bicycle trailers

Our Qeridoo bicycle trailers set standards in terms of safety and offer comprehensive protection for your child.

The stable frame construction and ergonomic design ensure high safety during the ride. The low center of gravity of the bicycle trailers minimizes the risk of tipping in a collision, while the reinforced aluminum frame and the back protectors offer additional protection.

The push handle acts as an effective roll-over protection and contributes to the stability of the bicycle trailer. The 5-point harness system secures your child at five points on the seat bench and ensures a firm and secure position.

The 5-point harness system ensures a firm and secure position.

Additionally, the innovative, patented head protectors protect your child in case of a tip-over, by ensuring a vital distance between the head of the child and the ground.

The 3-in-1 canopy reliably protects your child from sun, wind and rain. At the same time, the integrated insect protection ensures good ventilation inside the trailer.

Safety with child bicycle seats

Bicycle seats for children come in two main variants: seats for the back, mounted on the luggage rack or frame, and child seats for the front, directly on the head tube of the bike.

They offer significantly less protection compared to bicycle trailers in falls, since they are usually only secured by harnesses. In a fall they remain directly attached to the frame, which increases the risk of injury from impact.

A front bicycle seat in particular can be dangerous, since your child in a frontal impact or sudden stop sits in the first impact zone . For this reason, child seats for the front are also not allowed in all countries.

Flexibility

Bicycle trailer or child seat: versatility and flexibility in comparison

Qeridoo bicycle trailers offer outstanding versatility and flexibility that bicycle seats don't reach. Our trailers are available as both single-seaters and double-seaters and can be quickly switched from bicycle to buggy mode. So you can also practically use your trailer as a stroller.

The bicycle trailer can be flexibly used as a trailer, buggy or jogger.

The conversion is done easily by hitching the buggy wheel and the trailer tow bar, which can be stored space-savingly. The jogger wheel also allows you to adapt the trailer for various activities like jogging or skating, which is not possible with bicycle seats.

Bicycle trailers can be quickly mounted on different bikes and adapted to the needs of the whole family . Bicycle seats on the other hand are attached directly to the bicycle frame and offer a compact, fixed position with direct contact between child and rider. They are usually only suited for certain age and weight classes and offer no additional operating modes.

With the bicycle seat you're quickly and comfortably on the road with your child , however the uses are limited. Bicycle seats are therefore particularly suitable for short, everyday rides. Longer routes, outings or bicycle trips are not recommended with them.

Bicycle seats offer no comprehensive protective structure like bicycle trailers, which thanks to their stable construction and protection systems offer a higher safety standard. A bicycle trailer ensures through its construction better protection and more crumple zone in collisions and falls, which makes it overall safer than bicycle seats.

Tip: Adjust the bicycle seat regularly to the growth of your child and make sure all harnesses and attachments are tight. Perform a brief safety check before each ride to make sure the seat is secure.

Unlike bicycle trailers, bicycle seats generally offer no comprehensive weather protection. So your child is exposed more strongly to headwind, rain, mosquitos and other environmental influences with a bicycle seat.

Comfort

Comfort on the bike: child seat or trailer for a pleasant ride?

The Qeridoo child sport strollers, such as the Kidgoo, offer through their adaptive comfort seating system with integrated back protectors and side impact protection high riding comfort. The suspension of our trailers ensures a smooth ride, even on uneven terrain.

Thanks to the stable chassis and the leaf-spring damping system, shocks are minimized and the ride is smoother. Riding, braking and turning happens smoothly, since the trailer is well balanced and the suspension can be precisely adjusted to the child's weight.

In comparison, bicycle seats are mounted directly on the bicycle frame and offer a fixed, ergonomic sitting position. Although many models have padded seat surfaces and backrests and some offer adjustable footrests and backrests, they are often limited in padding and equipment.

Storage

More storage in the trailer for your adventure

Bicycle seats are more susceptible to shocks and vibrations, which makes braking and turning on bumpy paths less comfortable . They are more suited for short rides at moderate pace and offer not the same protection and flexibility as bicycle trailers.

Tip: Both with the bicycle trailer and the bicycle seat, practicing maneuvers like turning and braking is important. With the trailer you have to get used to the larger turning radius and the longer braking distance, while with the seat the weight shift in curves should be practiced.

Bicycle trailers are larger and require more space, but offer the advantage that they can be folded up quickly. This compact folding size allows easy stowing in the trunk or in the garage and makes them ideal for transport on vacation or trips.

Bicycle seats are compact and take up no additional space on the bike , which makes them practical for daily use and parking the bike . However, they offer not the same flexibility in storage and transport as foldable bicycle trailers.

Additionally, bicycle trailers offer generous storage for luggage and shopping, ideal for longer trips or daily needs. Our Qeridoo Kidgoo 2 offers you an XL trunk with silent magnetic closures. With double-seaters even two children can be transported at the same time , which is not possible with a bicycle seat.

In contrast, bicycle seats have no additional storage and are intended exclusively for child transport, which makes them more compact but less versatile. Additionally, extra luggage (e.g. a backpack) is hard to take along, for that e.g. a bicycle basket is needed.
Price

What is cheaper - bicycle seat or child bicycle trailer?

When choosing between a bicycle trailer and a bicycle seat, in addition to cost frequency of use and desired functions should also be considered.

Bicycle trailers are more expensive, since they have a more complex construction and offer additional functions like suspension systems and conversion options . The investment in a high-quality trailer pays off through its versatility and longevity, especially when used regularly for various activities.

The lower cost of a bicycle seat often comes with limited flexibility and less comfort, particularly on longer rides. A bicycle seat may offer a cost-effective solution, but with compromises in comfort and versatility compared to the bicycle trailer.

Tip: There is of course also nothing against the use of both transport options. This can also be of advantage in certain situations to benefit from the advantages of both variants. Especially when one person wants to transport for instance three children at once.

Conclusion

Bicycle trailer or bicycle seat: which option is the right one for you?

The choice between a bicycle trailer and a bicycle seat depends on your individual needs and priorities.

Bicycle seats are compact and offer a direct connection to the bike, which makes them practical for short, everyday rides. They are usually lighter and easier to mount, but offer significantly less protection and comfort on uneven terrain or on long rides. Bicycle trailers offer outstanding comfort, versatility and safety, particularly on longer rides and in various weather conditions.

The various models of Qeridoo child sport strollers are perfectly suited for families who are regularly on the move and want to offer their children a quiet, protected ride. For many families, space requirement is also a decisive reason to buy a trailer. Bicycle trailers offer lots of room and storage space for small shopping trips or also for outings to the beach.

For additional visibility reflector strips, the included rear light, a safety flag and a Z rear reflector provide. Our Qeridoo bicycle trailers can be used as early as the 4th week of life. Infants can safely ride along either in an infant carrier or in our hammock. The trailers are suitable for children up to about 4-5 years.
