Transport capacity and payload

Large volume for the cargo bike
Thanks to its special geometry, the cargo bike, when fully loaded, can transport up to 200 kg of payload. Depending on the bike, usually up to four children can ride along, with some cargo bikes even adults.
Most cargo bikes are therefore usable without an age limit for your child. However, they are usable for babies only from around 3 months of age with infant carrier and for toddlers from about one year with a child seat.

Bicycle trailer volume depending on size
Bicycle trailers come in various designs that have different transport capacities.
A cargo bicycle trailer can transport up to 220 kg of weight. For a child bicycle trailer, the permissible total weight is usually between 50 kg for a single-seater and 60 kg for a double-seater.
From as early as one month, infants can ride along with an infant carrier or hammock. A child bicycle trailer is suitable at least up to an age of approx. 4-5 years.
Flexibility and storage
Everyday use with the cargo bike
Multifunctionality with the bicycle trailer
Many child bicycle trailers also stand out for their versatility. You can use the trailer not just with the bicycle, but also as a buggy and walker use. In addition, most trailers can be practically extended via various operating modes.
This way you can also go jogging with your children in the trailer. With additional accessories you can adapt your trailer exactly to you and your child's needs. Cargo bikes don't offer this advantage of flexibility.
Bicycle trailers can usually also be folded up quickly and stored practically with a small pack size. So you can also transport it in the trunk and take it on vacation.
Safety in traffic
The cargo bike: visibility and handling
Likewise, the handling at low speed is sometimes unstable and the bike can tip in a collision. A three-wheeled cargo bike is recommended here, which offers a stable stand when stopped.
Steering can initially be a challenge with the cargo bike. It is therefore important that you practice various steering maneuvers in advance. This way you get used to the weight shift in curves.
The child bicycle trailer: protected in road traffic
Since child bicycle trailers are usually more compact and thus have a lower center of gravity, they are harder to see in traffic
compared to the
cargo bike. Therefore their traffic visibility is increased with reflector strips, a safety flag and a Z rear reflector.
Thanks to the special geometry of the trailer, it rarely tips over in a collision. In addition,
your child at Qeridoo is protected by our innovative and patented head protectors. In case of a tip-over, there is a
vital safety distance between your child's head and the ground.
With the easily adjustable and safe 5-point harness system, your child is secured at five points to the seat bench.
Compared to the 3-point harness of common cargo bikes, your child is therefore better protected in the bicycle trailer.
Apart from that,
your child is generally very well protected in the passenger cabin of the bicycle trailer. The push handle also acts as a
roll-over protection here.
Even with the bicycle trailer it is important that you get used to the larger turning radius and the
longer braking distance
and practice various steering maneuvers in advance.
The width of the trailer is greater than that of your bike. So
narrow bike paths and passages can become a challenge. You should pay particular attention to curbs. At excessive
speed, the bicycle trailer can tip when contacting a curb on one side!
Cost
A cargo bike usually has an electric motor. This is particularly advisable for longer and steeper routes. Above
all, due to the high total weight, a cargo bike without a motor would now be unthinkable. The bicycle trailer you can attach either to
a normal bike or to an e-bike. Here the total weight is
significantly lower!
The purchase costs are for a good cargo bike at least €1,500, significantly higher than
for the bicycle trailer. The latter you can usually acquire from as low as €500 (at Qeridoo even incl. suspension!).
This
assumes, however, that you already own a bicycle. Otherwise, the purchase price of a bicycle with trailer can be
comparable to that of a cargo bike. Both are also available as e-versions. Here the price for an e-bike with trailer or
cargo bike is again higher.
Protection from weather
Qeridoo child trailers offer your child with the 3-in-1 canopy insect, rain and sun protection. The insect net also ensures good ventilation inside the trailer. With a cargo bike too, your child can be protected with a rain or sun canopy . However, this usually has to be purchased as an add-on.
Riding comfort for your child
Most bicycle trailers include a seating system that can be adjusted to the size of your child.
With a
cargo bike this must
be added as an add-on. In addition, the seating of a cargo bike is usually not padded. The
comfort for your child in the bicycle trailer is therefore significantly higher!
Qeridoo child sport strollers have an adaptive
comfort seating system with integrated back protectors and side impact protection.
We recommend child bicycle trailers with suspension. This offers optimal comfort even on bumpy ground. With Qeridoo trailers, the leaf-spring damping system counteracts swinging and ensures a smooth and low-vibration transport. The suspension can be adjusted precisely to your child's weight and thus ensures even more comfort!
Cargo bike or bicycle trailer: which is right for you?
Before you decide on a child transport system, it is important that you ask yourself a few questions in advance.
- How much space is available for storage?
- How important is flexibility (different operating modes) to you?
- Is transport in the car important to you?
- Should heavy loads also be transported?
- What is your budget?
- How easy is the steering and handling in traffic?
- How well is your child protected in case of an accident or collision?
- How is your child protected from the weather?
- How do you always keep an eye on your child?
- How comfortably do the children sit in the trailer or cargo bike?
The most important point regarding transport is the safety of your child!
Which transport solution is right for you?

Qeridoo bietet hierfür spezielle Cargo-Einlegeplatten an.
