Cycling in the heat with your child
To make sure your child rides safely and comfortably in the childrens bicycle trailer even at higher summer temperatures, you should keep the following in mind:
- Heat protection: Plan rides for the cooler morning or evening hours and avoid the midday heat.
- Drink enough: Your child should drink regularly – ideally water or unsweetened tea.
- Use the shade: Choose shady routes and take regular breaks in the shade.
- Sun protection: Protect sensitive skin with sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses.
- Spot the warning signs: Watch for discomfort, tiredness or reddened skin in your child.
- Safety in the bicycle trailer: Ensure good ventilation and insect protection.
9 tips for hot summer days
Sunshine and headwind make a bike tour in summer particularly enjoyable – but heat and direct sunlight should not be underestimated, especially when there is a baby on board.
Babies and toddlers in particular cannot regulate their body temperature and are more prone to overheating and heat build-up. To ensure your child's safety in the trailer, the following tips will leave you well prepared.
Tip #1: Cycling in summer – choosing the right time of day
Ideally plan your bike tour for the cooler morning or evening hours. Avoid the midday heat – between 2 and 5 p.m. the strain is usually greatest. Even if the headwind feels cool, the midday heat can put a strain on your circulation and lead to dehydration if you do not drink enough.
Tip: Thanks to their versatile operating modes Qeridoo bicycle trailers convert to a walker with just a few simple steps. That way you can also conveniently use it as a stroller for a walk when the weather is too hot for cycling.Tip #2: Adapt your route to the weather
Babies are particularly sensitive to heat, so you should choose shady routes wherever possible – through woodland, for example, or along rivers and lakes, so you can cool off along the way. Also consider keeping your route flexible, so that you can take a shorter path or stop for a break if it gets too hot.
Tip: With an e-bike for the bicycle trailer you can regulate the physical effort by selecting a higher level of assistance when you need it.
Tip #3: Drink enough – before, during and after the ride
Regular fluid intake is crucial for staying fit in high temperatures.
- Adults: Plan rides for the cooler morning or evening hours and avoid the midday heat.
- Children (2–6 years): Your child should drink regularly – ideally water or unsweetened tea.
- Breastfed babies: Choose shady routes and take regular breaks in the shade.
Plan regular drink breaks and always keep a water bottle within reach. And do not forget to rebalance your fluid levels after the ride. Make sure your baby produces enough urine – as much as on days with milder weather.
The best thirst quenchers are water, unsweetened fruit or herbal teas and heavily diluted juice spritzers. Make sure the drinks are cool but not ice cold – lukewarm liquids help prevent stomach cramps and support temperature regulation.
Tip #4: Protect against direct sun
Protect yourself and your child from the sun. Apply sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (at least 50) to all areas exposed to the sun (face, ears, arms and legs).
You can also protect your child with light headwear. Once it can sit upright unaided, we recommend that it always wears a helmet in the bicycle trailer. Alternatively you can fit a headrest.
Use the 3-in-1 canopy of the bicycle trailer, which offers protection from insects, rain and direct sunlight. The Qeridoo canopy is water-repellent, tested for harmful substances and offers UV protection of 50+.
Also pay attention to proper UV protection for the eyes: A good pair of sunglasses with 100 % UV protection reliably protects your eyes from harmful solar radiation. That way you are not dazzled and always have a clear view of the road.
Tip #5: Ensure good ventilation
Use the 3-in-1 canopy with integrated sun protection, but also make sure there is sufficient air circulation. Depending on the model, open the ventilation windows to let in fresh air. The integrated insect protection net provides optimal ventilation inside the trailer.
When the sun is particularly low or you are riding towards it, a towel over the bicycle trailer can provide extra shade. While riding, however, you should fasten it securely.
Avoid covering the trailer completely, though: According to a 2023 study from Australia temperatures in covered strollers rise by up to 3.7 degrees Celsius. A damp cotton cloth laid loosely over the trailer, by contrast, can lower the temperature by around 3 degrees Celsius.
Tip #6: Take regular breaks
Especially on longer rides, breaks are important to avoid overheating. Find a shady spot for the break and give your child the opportunity to move and cool down.
Important: Regularly check the temperature in the bicycle trailer to ensure that it doesn't get too hot inside.
Tip #7: Refreshing snacks for on the go
Even in hot weather it is important to eat regularly – even with little appetite from heat. Pack small, refreshing snacks that supply you and your child with energy and fluid.
For toddlers, small watermelon pieces without seeds, fruit puree or jello are especially suitable. Also cucumber slices, berries and other fruit provide lots of fluid.
These snacks help to quickly rebalance the water balance and at the same time supply energy and the necessary refreshment.
Tip #9: Protect yourself and your child from insects
In the hot summer months not just high temperatures can become dangerous, but also insects like mosquitoes and ticks. Particularly on outings in nature you should protect yourself and your child well from these.
For children there are special natural-based insect repellents for particularly sensitive skin. Please always observe the product's age recommendation.
In addition, the insect protection in the bicycle trailer protects your child from insects, dirt and stones. Make sure that this is closed during the ride, especially on dusty paths or near high grass.
Tip #8: Recognize warning signs of overheating
On hot days it's important to quickly recognize the first signs of overheating and react promptly.
Among the first symptoms are discomfort, dizziness, fatigue and reddened skin. A combination of too strong direct sun exposure and physical exertion with too low fluid intake are usually the cause for overheating.
If you notice these signs in your child, find shade as quickly as possible, offer water and cool your child's head with a damp cloth. If no improvement occurs, please absolutely seek medical help.

FAQ – The most frequently asked questions about cycling in hot weather
Yes, with the right preparation and an adjusted riding style, cycling in hot weather with a child is safe. Babies and toddlers cannot yet regulate their body temperature well and are more prone to overheating than adults. That is why sufficient sun protection, regular drinking breaks, shady routes and good ventilation in the trailer are particularly important.
The integrated 3-in-1 canopy of Qeridoo trailers offers UV protection 50+ and reliably screens out direct sunlight. In addition, sunscreen with SPF 50+ should be applied to all exposed skin. A light head covering provides extra protection for the head. Open the ventilation windows and use the insect protection net – it provides fresh air inside at the same time.
A completely covered trailer should be avoided: internal temperatures rise quickly in summer. A loosely draped, slightly dampened cotton cloth, by contrast, can lower the temperature inside by around 3 degrees Celsius – making it a sensible option on particularly hot days, provided it is fastened securely.
Shady routes are a clear advantage at high temperatures – through woods, for example, or along rivers or lakes, where it is cooler and there are opportunities to cool down. The route should be planned flexibly so that you can choose a shorter alternative in an emergency or take a spontaneous break. With an e-bike, physical effort can be reduced further through higher motor assistance.
The first warning signs are discomfort, dizziness, unusual tiredness and reddened skin. The cause is usually a combination of too much sunlight, body heat and too little fluid. If these signs appear, seek shade immediately, offer cool water and cool the child's head with a damp cloth. If there is no improvement, medical help should be sought without delay.
The integrated insect protection net of the bicycle trailer reliably keeps out mosquitoes, horseflies and other insects – it should stay closed especially on dusty paths or near tall grass. For additional protection there are special natural-based insect repellents for sensitive children's skin – always observe the product's age recommendation.
Yes, that is a good alternative when it is too hot for a bike ride. Qeridoo bicycle trailers can be switched to Buggy Mode in just a few steps and can then be used as a stroller for a walk – a flexible option for cooler times of day or cool areas, so you can still get out into the fresh air with your child.
