Cycling in heat: how to protect yourself and your child

Sunny days are perfect for a bike tour. However, cycling in heat can also become a real challenge – especially for your child in the bicycle trailer. To avoid too high temperatures or overheating, the right preparation is crucial.

The key points in brief

Cycling in heat with your child

So your child can also ride safely and comfortably in the child bicycle trailer at higher summer temperatures, you should observe the following:

  • Heat protection: Plan rides in the cooler morning or evening hours and avoid midday heat.
  • Drink enough: Your child should regularly drink – best water or unsweetened tea.
  • Use shade: Choose shady routes and take regular breaks in the shade.
  • Sun protection: Protect sensitive skin with sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses.
  • Recognize warning signs: Pay attention to discomfort, fatigue or reddened skin in your child.
  • Safety in the bicycle trailer: Ensure good ventilation and insect protection.

9 tips for hot summer days

Sunshine and headwind make a bike tour in summer particularly nice – but heat and direct sun should not be underestimated, especially when a baby is on board.

Cycling in heat can also strain your child in the bicycle trailer.

Because especially babies and toddlers cannot regulate their body temperature and are more susceptible to overheating and heat stress. So the safety of your child in the trailer is ensured, you're well prepared with the following tips.

Tip #1: Cycling in summer – choose the right time of day

Plan the bike tour ideally in the cooler morning or evening hours. Avoid midday heat – between 14:00 and 17:00 the strain is usually highest. Even if the headwind feels cool, the midday heat can strain the circulation and lead to dehydration with too low fluid intake.

Tip: Thanks to the versatile operating modes, Qeridoo bicycle trailers can be converted to walker mode with just a few hand movements. So you can also practically use it as a stroller for a walk , when the weather is too hot for cycling.

Tip #2: Adapt your route to the weather

Babies are particularly sensitive to heat, therefore you should choose shady routes whenever possible – for example through forests or along rivers and lakes, so you can cool down in between.

Tip: With an e-bike for the bicycle trailer you can regulate the physical effort by choosing greater support when needed.

Tip #3: Drink enough – before, during and after the ride

Regular fluid intake is decisive to stay fit at high temperatures.

  • Adults: Plan rides in the cooler morning or evening hours and avoid midday heat.
  • Children (2–6 years): Your child should drink regularly – best water or unsweetened tea.
  • Babies during breastfeeding: Choose shady routes and take regular breaks in the shade.

Plan regular drinking breaks and always keep a water bottle within reach. Also don't forget to rebalance fluid levels after the ride. Make sure that your baby produces sufficient urine – the same amount as on days with milder weather.

The best thirst quenchers are water, unsweetened fruit or herbal teas as well as heavily diluted juice spritzers. Make sure the drinks are cool but not ice-cold – lukewarm fluids prevent stomach cramps and support temperature regulation.

Attention:
While out and about it's important to pay attention to drinking water sources and at public fountains to make sure they have drinking-water quality.

Tip #4: Protect from direct sun

Protect yourself and your child from the sun. Apply sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (at least 50) to all areas exposed to the sun (face, ears, arms and legs).

Additionally you can protect your child with a light headwear. If they can sit upright independently, we recommend that they always wear a helmet in the bicycle trailer. Alternatively you can attach a headrest.

Sun protection in the Qeridoo child bicycle trailer
Sunscreen and headwear are among the must-haves for cycling in heat.

Use the 3-in-1 canopy of the bicycle trailer, which offers protection from insects, rain and direct sunlight. The Qeridoo canopy is water-repellent, toxicologically tested and offers a UV protection of 50+.

Also pay attention to the right UV protection for the eyes: A good pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection reliably protects your eyes from harmful sun radiation. So you won't be dazzled and always have a good view of the road.

Tip #5: Ensure good ventilation

Use the 3-in-1 canopy with integrated sun protection, but also pay attention to sufficient air circulation. Depending on the model, open the available ventilation windows to ensure fresh air. The integrated insect net offers optimal ventilation inside the trailer.

When the sun is particularly low or you ride toward the sun, a towel over the bicycle trailer can offer additional shade . However, during the ride you should secure this well.

However, avoid covering the trailer completely: According to a study from Australia from 2023, temperatures rise with covered strollers by up to 3.7 degrees Celsius. A moistened cotton cloth that is loosely placed over the trailer can on the other hand lower the temperature by about 3 degrees Celsius.

The child bicycle trailer can be covered with a damp cotton cloth in heat.
Also when it comes to clothing, the right ventilation matters: opt for light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to promote air circulation. Light colors additionally reflect the sun.
