The key points in brief

From what age can you take your baby in the Qeridoo bicycle trailer?

To ensure that your child can enjoy the ride in the bicycle trailer, here is an overview of the age recommendations for using child bicycle trailers. So you can see at a glance from when the baby bicycle trailer is suitable for your child.

From 4 weeks: Use of an infant carrier or hammock for newborns who cannot yet sit independently.
From 6 to 9 months: Continued use of infant carrier or hammock; older babies can lie comfortably.
From 9 to 12 months: Your child can usually ride along without a seat insert when they can sit upright independently.

Up to about 4 to 5 years: Bicycle trailers are usually suitable for children up to this age.

Transport in the bicycle trailer

From what age can your child ride along?

Using a bicycle trailer to transport babies is a great way to enjoy outings together. You can start as early as the 4th week of life, as long as your baby is secured in a suitable baby shell or hammock.

These accessories ensure that your newborn is transported safely and comfortably, even before it can sit up unaided. As soon as your child is able to sit upright on its own – usually at around 9 to 12 months – it can ride in the trailer without additional accessories.

Tip: Thanks to the various operating modes, our bicycle trailers can be used as strollers.

An important advantage of bicycle trailers is their longevity: they can generally be used up to an age of about 4 to 5 years. That means you can use the trailer for many years for all kinds of activities. It makes the trailer a practical choice for active families.

 Important:

As soon as your child can sit up unaided, it should always wear a helmet in the bicycle trailer.

Helmet requirements in a bicycle trailer: what applies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?

In Germany there is no legal helmet requirement for children in a bicycle trailer – experts and pediatricians nevertheless expressly recommend wearing a helmet as soon as your child can sit up unaided. In Austria, by contrast, children under 12 are legally required to wear a bicycle helmet – and that also applies in a bicycle trailer.

In Switzerland there is currently no general helmet requirement, but road safety organizations also strongly recommend a helmet.

Travel tip: Popular holiday destinations such as Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic also have helmet requirements for children – check the local rules before you set off

Accessories for newborns

Safe baby inserts for the littlest ones

When transporting babies – newborns and infants – in a bicycle trailer, safety comes first. That makes choosing the right baby insert for the bicycle trailer crucial.

Baby in a bicycle trailer: from what age can it ride in the baby shell?

Our Qeridoo baby shell was developed specifically for this purpose and offers an ideal solution for babies from the 4th week of life until they can sit up on their own. With its ergonomic reclining position, the baby shell supports good posture of the head and back and thus guarantees a pleasant and safe ride.

An ergonomic reclining position is particularly important for babies in a bicycle trailer.

Important: The weight recommendations vary depending on the accessory. Our baby shell is ideal for newborns from the 4th week of life up to about 12 months or 12 kilograms. For older babies, the hammock offers a flexible reclining position and is suitable up to an age of 15 months or a weight of 13 kilograms.

Bicycle trailer and hammock: from what age can a baby use them?

While the baby shell is ideal for younger babies who need extra support, we recommend using our hammock for older infants who prefer an adjustable and comfortable reclining position.

The hammock can also be used from the 4th week of life. It is suitable for toddlers up to 13 kilograms and offers more flexibility. The reclining position and angle can be adjusted here so that lively babies feel comfortable too.

In addition, our innovative, patented head protectors protect your child in the event of a rollover by maintaining a vital distance between your child's head and the ground.

Reflective strips, the supplied rear light, a pennant and a Z-reflector provide extra safety in traffic.

"Choosing between a baby shell and a hammock is not a matter of taste but of the child's individual development. That is why we always advise parents to look closely at how their baby sits or lies – not just at its age."

Practical tips

5 tips for a safe bicycle adventure with toddlers

Cycling with small children in the trailer can be a wonderful way to explore nature together. With the following tips you're well prepared to take your baby or toddler safely and comfortably in the bicycle trailer. Nothing stands in the way of an unforgettable adventure!

Tip #1: Safety first – take the most important precautions

Before you head out with the bicycle trailer, safety comes first . Check all safety-related components: the safety harness, the attachment systems and the stability of the bicycle trailer are crucial.

Storage in the Qeridoo child bicycle trailer
Before the ride, the bike and the trailer should be checked for roadworthiness.

Your child should always be well secured in the bicycle trailer . Make sure that the infant carrier or hammock is correctly and stably installed.

Regular checks of the safety harnesses are also important to ensure that they fit well and hold your baby in the right position.

Important:

Make sure that your bike is suitable for a child bicycle trailer, because not every bike is designed for trailers . Especially with the combination of e-bikes and bicycle trailers the legal requirements must be observed.

Tip #2: Keep an eye on weather conditions

Before planning your ride, inform yourself about the weather conditions. In cold or wet weather, the trailer should have a rain canopy.

The rain canopy additionally protects your child from wind and weather.

For sunny days a sun canopy or a sun shade is indispensable. Our 3-in-1 canopy protects your child from sun, wind and rain and thanks to insect protection ensures good ventilation.

Important: Also take along warm clothing or a blanket so your child stays warm during the ride.

Tip #3: Child-friendly on the road for a pleasant riding experience

Ride gently and looking ahead. Avoid abrupt braking and sharp curves, as these can impair the stability of the trailer.

A calm riding style ensures that your child feels comfortable and sits securely.

The ride in the child bicycle trailer is particularly gentle thanks to the suspension.

The leaf-spring damping system minimizes shocks. Avoid bumpy roads and cobblestones to increase comfort.

On longer rides, take regular breaks so your child can move and get fresh air.

Tip #4: Practice turning maneuvers and riding technique

Practice turning maneuvers and riding techniques in a safe environment, ideally first with an empty trailer.

This way you develop a good feel for the handling and react with confidence in road traffic.

Tip #5: Fun and entertainment for your child

Plan entertaining elements like favorite toys or snacks to avoid boredom.

Toys and snacks provide entertainment during the ride.

Music, conversations about the surroundings or shared observations of nature make the ride varied and positive.

Legal background

Is there a legal minimum age for a bicycle trailer?

The German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) do not set a specific legal minimum age for carrying babies in a bicycle trailer. The decision on when to take your child along is therefore yours as a parent – guided by the physical development of your baby.

Important: The law permits children to be carried in a bicycle trailer up to the age of 7, provided the rider is at least 16 years old (§ 21 (3) StVO). Our age recommendations above are not based on this legal upper limit, however, but on the actual physical development of your child – and that is what matters for safe and comfortable transport.

"Just because something would be legally allowed earlier does not mean it makes sense. At Qeridoo we base our recommendations consistently on the child's motor development – safety always comes before what is merely feasible."
